NVQ Level 1 – Introduction to Construction Skills

Level 1 Award in Construction

The purpose of this qualification is to equip learners with the knowledge and understanding to progress to further training in a construction trade area at Level 2, and on completion at Level 2 to progress into a job role in the construction industry.

This Level 1 qualification provides learners with an overview of the construction industry and influencing factors both locally and nationally. Learners will also develop an understanding of the health and safety requirements for working in the construction industry.

Construction Health & Safety – 5 credits – Level1

The purpose of this unit is to develop an understanding of how health and safety is managed within the construction sector.

Learning outcome

1. Know about legislation and organisational policies and procedures related to health and safety.
2. Know about the hazards and risks within the construction industry.
3. Know about incident reporting procedures.
4. Know how hazards and risks are controlled.
5. Know about own responsibilities and behaviors necessary when working in construction.
6. Know about welfare and personal hygiene in construction.
7. Know about first aid in construction.
8. Know about the importance of security arrangements in construction.
9. Know the hazards, risks and health and safety requirements of manual handling.
10. Know about the hazards, risks and health and safety requirements of working at heights.
11. Know about the hazards, risks and health and safety requirements for hazardous substances.
12. Know about the hazards, risks and health and safety related to the use of plant and equipment in the construction industry.
13. Know about the hazards, risks and health and safety requirements of confined space working.
14. Know about the hazards, risks and health and safety requirements relating to working with, and around, electrical equipment.

The Construction Industry- 5 credits – Level 1

The aim of this unit is to provide learners with an overview of the construction industry and in fluencing factors both locally and nationally.

1. Know about the areas that construction operates in and the roles involved.
2. Know about the different stages of a construction project.
3. Know about the materials used in construction.
4. Know about the sources of information in the construction industry.
5. Know about new technology in construction.
6. Know about sustainability in construction.
